What a day! All eyes were on the Dorset Council election, being counted at Redlands Sports Centre in Weymouth. There were plenty of nervous politicians from all Parties as the day wore on. Counting did not actually begin until about 1400, but when it did the results came in pretty fast. With the public mood not in our favour at the moment, our councillors were understandably apprehensive. I arrived at the count at about 1530 and was soon chatting to all our candidates and our inexhaustible Chairman, Barry Quinn. From the outset, we knew we would lose seats and we did. At the end of the day, we went from 43 councillors to 30. Although disappointing, it could have been a lot worse. Cllr Louie O'Leary did outstandingly well, as did Peter Dickenson. Congratulations to them. Cllrs Bill Trite and Gary Suttle held in Swanage and they too must be congratulated. I had heard an ugly rumour that Lib Dem supporters in Wool last Saturday were spreading despicable rumours about Peter Wharf who has cancer. This was further confirmed to me at the count. If true, it's despicable. As the results came in across the country, it was clear we had lost many councillors. My deepest sympathy to them all and my thanks for their hard work. In better news, we heard that Mayor Ben Houchen had held and we hear about Andy Street in the West Midlands tomorrow. Also tomorrow, we get the town and parish council results and those for the Police & Crime Commissioner. Good luck David Sidwick. Politics is a tough-old business, but we are all mere servants of our voters and if they no longer want us to represent them, we get the heave-ho. That's politics.
